Grandmaster Alexander Chernin celebrates his 50th birthday today.
Originally from Ukraine, he now represents Hungary. In 1985 Chernin won the USSR Championship and later that year he qualified for the Candidates Tournament in Montpellier.
His current rating of 2611 makes him the No 6 player in Hungary. His best rating so far was 2645 (January 1998).
One of his star pupils is Fabiano Caruana.
