MANILA, Philippines – Asia’s first Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre will make an appearance as the guest speaker during the formal opening of the 2012 Luneta Open Rapid Chess Championships on Saturday at the Luneta Lapu-Lapu statue in the historic Rizal Park in Manila.
Torre, the founding president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, is expected to encourage participants in the grassroots competition to continue to play chess, as well as to share some of his secrets for his rise as one of the world’s top players during his time.
“GM Eugene is the perfect choice to be our guest speaker, since most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol, aside from our very own GM Wesley (So),” said International Master (IM) Chito Garma.
Garma organized the chess tournament along with candidate masters Peter Lim, Cesar Mendiola and Louie Ramos, the chairman of the Rizal Paker Chess Foundation.
GMs Wesley So, Mark Paragua, Oliver Barbosa, Darwin Laylo, Rogelio Barcenilla and IMs Ronald Dableo, Rolando Nolte and Emmanuel Senador will lead the field in the one-day tournament which offers P15,000 cash prize to the champion.
The event in sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, headed by chairman/president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr.
