Indian Chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy on Saturday appealed to parents to encourage their children to pursue sports as a career.
Addressing a gathering of schoolchildren after inaugurating ‘Machilipatnam Yuvakeratalu’, a two-day cultural festival, Ms. Humpy stressed the need to set a goal and make continuous efforts to achieve it.
She also lauded students for their active participation in the festival, which was held on Hindu College grounds. The event is organised by a group of citizens of Machilipatnam under the aegis of Excise and B.C. Welfare Minister. Career counsellor and writer Yendamuri Veerendranth was felicitated on the occasion. More than 12,000 students representing 78 schools and colleges have registered for various events at the festival, which will conclude on Sunday evening. Former CBI Joint Director Mr. Laxmi Narayana will attend the closing ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Excise and BC Welfare Minister Mr. Kollu Ravindra announced that a mini stadium would be constructed at Machilipatnam, and that serous efforts were being made to make available 26 acres for the purpose. “A proposal to develop Manginapudi beach has been prepared, and nearly 150 acres near the beach are available for development of various tourism projects,” he added.
