Czech GM Lubomir Kavalek was born on the 9th of August 1943 in Prague. He left Czechoslovakia during the Soviet invasion of 1968 and later settled in the United States. Kavalek was one of the world’s leading players in the 1970s. For example, he took part in the Montreal-1979 supertournament.
Later Kavalek was the executive director of the GMA. He is a well-known chess author and journalist, writing for the Washington Post.
