Bulgaria’s only golden medalist at Beijing Olympic Games 2008, the rower Rumyana Neykova, was voted the country’s Sports Personality of the Year on Monday.
Neykova received her award from the President Georgi Parvanov at a splendid ceremony in Sofia’s Rainbow Plaza.
The champion got 3,017 points from the vote held among hundreds of sports journalists from 75 Bulgarian media outlets in the 51st edition of the awards.
Last year’s winner and Beijing silver medalist, wrestler Stanka Zlateva, came in second.
I did not manage to grab the Olympic gold so I will continue pursuing my dream,” Zlateva said.
The third position in the ranking was occupied by Beijing bronze medalist, wrestler Kiril Terziev.
The journalists voting in the poll also picked Rumyana Neykova’s husband, Svilen Neykov, as “Coach of the Year.”
The first ten in the list have been completed by the names of the wrestlers Radoslav Velikov and Yavor Yanakiev, the top swimmer Petar Stoychev, the boxer Kubrat Pulev, Bulgaria’s youngest tennis champion Grigor Dimitrov, Manchester United’s striker Dimitar Berbatov and the chess player Vesselin Topalov.
