When I started SPICE at Texas Tech in 2007, chess was not something most people talk about. That has since changed. In the past five years, one of the biggest impacts SPICE made in additional to winning big time national championships is to the local community. Countless schools in the South Plains offer chess and local tournaments are getting bigger and bigger. About 130 youngsters showed up earlier today for the last chess tournament of the season before school is out. The Knight Raiders did a great job organizing and running the event. It is wonderful to see big chess growth in West Texas.
